Blood Song: The Story of the Hatfields and the McCoys Comes to Elkhorn City

"Blood Song: The Story of the Hatfields and the McCoys" Goes Countywide and Possibly More to open ACT's Season
Bryan Ratliff
After a successful inaugural run at the Hatfield-McCoy Outdoor Theater in McCarr, KY, “Blood Song: The Story of the Hatfields and the McCoys” has come to the stage of Artists Collaborative Theatre to open their 2013-2014 season. The show opened at ACT on September 5th, and runs through September 29th. Come out and join us on a journey that takes you back to when these two families waged war on each other and feel as if you are right there with them as the most famous story of our area, and our heritage, is told.

Written by Chelsea Marcantel, “Blood Song” is the product of a joint effort of the Hatfield & McCoy Arts Council, the University of Kentucky Extension Office of Pike County, Pike County Extension Fine Arts, and Artists Collaborative Theatre. The play tells the entire history of the feud, from Asa Harmon McCoy's murder during the Civil War, until the hanging of Ellison "Cotton Top" Mounts in 1890. However, unlike most re-tellings of the feud, this story is told through the narration of some of the lesser known participants of the feud, and not by the two family patriarchs of Devil Anse Hatfield and Ran'l McCoy. Telling the story of the feud in this manner, the audience can see a balanced story of the two families, and witness how each fought to protect and preserve their own, and not get caught up in the sensationalism that the newspapers of the era seemed to focus. Seeing the success that “Blood Song” had during its original run at McCarr, in the heart of where the feud took place, a decision was made by the Hatfield & McCoy Arts Council that this story of our area's history needed to be shared with the world. ACT met that challenge by taking the first step, and bringing “Blood Song” to the opposite end of the county from where the feud happened.

“Blood Song: The Story of the Hatfields and the McCoys” will be showing at ACT through September 29th. Showtimes are Thursday-Saturday at 7:30 PM, and Sunday at 3:00 PM. Ticket prices are $9.00 and a return ticket policy that you may come back to a performance of the same show on the same ticket. For more information, call our box office at (606) 754-4228.
